WHO IS WHO
"Who Is Who" recognizes Iowans of Asian and Pacific Islander heritage who demonstrated outstanding leadership and inspired others through their exemplary work.

  • Hualing Nieh Engle of Iowa City, Iowa, born in Hupei, China. Director of the University of Iowa International Writing Program from 1977 to 1988, author of 22 books and Nobel Peace Prize nominee in 1976.
  • Doua Lor, the first Asian Outreach officer of Des Moines police department's Asian Outreach Program, who is assigned to work part-time with 17 Asian and Pacific Island organizations as well as Asians involved in neighborhoods, banks, churches, temples and businesses.
  • Inbo and Wonhee Jung of Des Moines opened Jung's Oriental Food Store in 1972 with a $3,000 loan.   Over the subsequent decades, they made a success out of the store, sold it, then launched the Ingersoll Wine & Spirits.  It is a multimillion-dollar business with 12 employees and two locations. 
  • Vinh Nguyen, commissioner of CAPI, excellent educator and cultural specialist.
  • Chris Keahi (The Aloha Spirit Lives in Iowa) of Des Moines, Iowa, will overhear people talking to each other at Target or a parking lot with the specialty dialect of the Islands, and he will toss out a phrase that only they will understand. He has met a lot of former Islanders this way, and they are usually pretty surprised to find him.
  • Suku Radia of West Des Moines, Iowa, President of Bankers Trust Company in Des Moines. Born and raised in Kampala, Uganda, Suku came to the United States in 1971 to attend Iowa State.
  • Surasee "See" Rodari, vice President and Comsumer Services Manager for Bankers Trust. On January 26, 2007, See was appointed Honorary Trade Advisor to the Ministry of Commerce, Royal Thai Government to the United States.  This means that Surasee has authorization to conduct activities on behalf of the Ministry of Commerce of Thailand within the U.S.
  • Ying Sa of Des Moines, Iowa. Woman entrepreneur of a CPA firm that serves non-English-speaking clients and helping businesses with immigration or international investment issues.  2009 Iowa Council for Internatinoal Understanding Passport to Prosperity recipient. 
  • Sahai Family of Webster City, Iowa. Sahai Family has contributed in excess of $10 million to various educational institutions, temples, and medical centers across Iowa.  
  • Ian Loo of Des Moines, Iowa. 2009 Immigratn Entrepreneur Leadershi Award recipient.  A Burmese community leader. 
  • Augustus (Gus) Lartius (1922-2007) of Boone, Iowa. Born in Lucknow, India; served 7 consecutive terms as the President of the Organization of Transportation and State Employees; Iowa Department of Transportation Employment Relations Director; Iowa Department of Personnel Employment Relations Associate Director; organized an international group of humanities to help refugees from Kosovo.  A conference room in the Lucas State Office Building was named after him upon his retirement after 37 years of service to Iowa.
